Also known as the Holocaust Memorial, the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe was a brief but thought-provoking stop during my guided tour of Berlin. The site features nearly 3,000 concrete slabs arranged in a vast grid, their varying heights creating a powerful, disorienting atmosphere as you move through the space.
Unlike many historical memorials, this one isn't located at the site of a specific atrocity or event. Instead, it serves as Germany’s central monument to the six million Jewish victims of the Holocaust — a national symbol of remembrance, atonement, and reflection.
Today, it’s also a major tourist destination. While some visitors engage deeply with the meaning of the site, for others it seems more like a photo opportunity. I’ll be honest — I wasn’t especially moved during my short visit. Perhaps the time was too brief, or the atmosphere disrupted by the crowds.
I understand there's an underground Information Centre offering deeper context, but unfortunately I didn’t have time to explore it. Maybe next time.
